Contribution to the morphological study of the third stage larva of Mecistocirrus digitatus (Linstow, 1906) Railliet and Henry, 1912

Tecnica Pecuaria en Mexico 25(1): 15-24

The morphology of the 3rd stage larvae of M. digitatus is described. The larvae were cultured from eggs obtained from gravid females, collected from bovine abomasa in Mexico. At the extreme anterior end of the body, two coffee-coloured kidney-shaped spots occur, termed "Cobra" or "kuppuswamy" spots by the authors; they are the principle morphological characteristic used in the identification of the species. The heads of the larvae bear transverse cuticular ridges, which persist in the adult.
