Contribution to the study of drought resistance in bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) and durum wheat (Triticum durum Desf.): study of proline accumulation during development

Trials were carried out in the field on 10 durum wheat cultivars (1980), 7 durum wheat and 25 bread wheat cultivars (1981) and 6 durum wheat and 19 bread wheat cultivars (1983). Overall, leaf proline content was inversely related to rainfall and directly related to maximum daily temperature; also, the maximum proline content was negatively correlated with transpiration resistance and the correlation was stronger in the bread wheats than in the durum wheats.
