Long-term experiments in Romania demonstrated that in clay loam soil, ploughing as basic tillage can be replaced by discing for 1-2 years. Minimum soil cultivation was inadequate. For seedbed preparation, good results were obtained with a disc harrow in combination with a toothed harrow, resulting in good incorporation of plant residues and more efficient control of perennial weeds. Herbicides proved helpful but not a substitute in controlling weeds.
