In field trials in 1980-86 at Braila, barley grain yields on a typical vermic chernozem were 3.96, 6.68, 5.10 and 5.33 t/ha with no irrigation, irrigation to 50% field capacity in autumn and during vegetative growth, irrigation to 50% field capacity in autumn and initial vegetative stages and irrigation during vegetative stages only, resp., with water consumption of 0.94, 0.74, 0.77 and 0.86 msuperscript 3/kg grain.
