A national collection of Romanian and foreign cherries was established at the Iasi Fruit Tree Research Station in 1981, all on the rootstocks Mahaleb and Cires Franc. The collection includes at present 474 varieties, hybrids and local biotypes, of which about 56% are Romanian; 67 varieties and biotypes of sour cherry come from the Iasi area.
