A virus isolated from spinach plants with rugose symptoms in Japan, identified as cucumber mosaic virus and designated CMV-SR, caused no symptoms on systemically infected tomato plants and in glasshouse tests it effectively protected against infection by a virulent str., either sap inoculated or by aphid transmission.
