Early lifting of bulbs of the Dutch iris Telstar before they were properly ripened resulted in considerably increased infection by Penicillium rots (over 30% loss during forcing compared with 7% or less for ripened stock lifted 3 or 4 weeks later). In another trial, sterilization of the bulbs in 1% formalin before forcing reduced fungal infection to 6%, compared with 13% in untreated lots.
