In trials on clay soil and sedge peat soil assessed in May and June 1984, resp., direct drilling of grass into swards killed with desiccant gave 63 and 56% Lolium perenne and 37 and 41% Poa annua in swards on the 2 soil types, resp., where no additional herbicide was used, and 94 and 86% L. perenne and 1 and 13% P. annua where 5 litres Tramat (ethofumesate)/ha was applied at drilling and 2.5 litres/ha in spring; similar results were obtained where the autumn application was delayed until L. perenne had 3-4 leaves. In further trials in 1985-86 on clay soil and sandy soil, populations of P. annua were low and treatment had little effect on yield and none on digestibility or nutritive value.
