Control of dock and creeping thistle in ryegrass and red fescue swards

Fluroxypyr (0.25-1 kg/ha) and metsulfuron methyl (3.75-15 g/ha) gave good control of Rumex obtusifolius when sprayed in Aug. With May application, neither herbicide produced as good control. Maximum effects were reached after 1 month with fluroxypyr and 2-3 months after spraying with metsulfuron methyl. Glufosinate applied in Aug. at a rate of 1.2 kg/ha gave prolonged control but caused up to 2 months' damage to Lolium perenne. There was little damage to L. perenne from fluroxypyr.
