Control of legume cover crops for no-till and allelopathic effects

On a sandy loam soil, various combinations of 1.68 or 3.36 kg glyphosate, 0.56 kg paraquat, 0.56 kg 2,4-D, 0.2 kg dicamba and 0.84 kg cyanazine/ha were applied to kill cover crops of Trifolium incarnatum and Vicia hirsuta. The herbicides were applied as a tank mixture with 1.12 kg atrazine and 2.24 kg metolachlor on the day maize was sown or with 2.24 kg fluometuron/ha 3 weeks before sowing cotton. Plots treated with paraquat gave higher yields than those receiving slower-acting herbicides.
