Control of passive influx of calcium in corn root tissue

The entry of Ca into maize root cells was passive and through channels which appeared to be voltage-regulated as in animal cells. Environmental stresses increased passive entry whereas hyperpolarization reduced it and growth regulators had no effect. Increased Ca entry into injured cells opened K+ channels which caused K leakage from cells. Root Ca efflux was enhanced by fusicoccin in freshly cut but not in washed segments.
