Control of stem rot of rice with foliar application of fungicides

Of the 20 different fungicides (systemic and non-systemic) and antibiotics evaluated for the control of stem rot of rice caused by Sclerotium oryzae Catt. the following were effective: Benlate 50WP or Fundazol 50WP at 1.13 kg/ha sprayed twice at panicle initiation (PI) and boot stage or 2.25 kg/ha once either at PI or boot stage, or at both the stages. Homai 80WP sprayed at 1.13 kg/ha once at PI stage or Homai followed by Topsin-M 70WP sprayed at PI and boot stage, respectively at 2.25 kg/ha, and Topsin-M 70WP sprayed at 2.25 kg/ha once at PI stage. Though in a few cases the effect on disease did not correlate with that of yield, the Homai + Topsin-M combination appeared to be the best. Some of the other fungicides effective in one or two experiments did not show any consistent results. The effectiveness of all these fungicides was less during the wet season, i.e., aus (March-July) than during the transplanted aman (July-December) or boro (November-May) season.
