Control of wild oats infesting wheat

Control of wild oats infesting wheat

Difesa delle Piante 9(1): 31-38

Avena ludoviciana (Avena sterilis subsp. ludoviciana) is the main wild oat species found in wheat crops in Italy. Other species are A. macrocarpa, A. fatua and A. barbata. Stubble cultivations give some control but are mainly useful in encouraging germination of wild oat seeds, thus allowing post-em. herbicides to be applied at the correct growth stage of the weed. Isoproturon is safe to use in soft wheat but is phytotoxic to durum wheat.
