For 20 or 24 weeks 336 7-week-old pullets were given: a control diet freely (crude protein (CP) 16%); low-protein diet (CP 12%) with normal lysine (0.7%); low-protein diet (CP 12%) with low lysine (0.4%); control diet with sawdust 14% (crude fibre 17%); control diet at 70% of free intake; control diet with access restricted to 6 h daily; or control diet freely on alternate days.
