This paper was presented at the 10th ISTRO conference on 'Reduced tillage - rational use in sustained production', held on 8-12 July, 1985 at Guelph, Canada. In each of 4 seasons, zero, 1, 2, 4 and 6 passes of an unladen tractor were applied uniformly both to ploughed and secondary cultivated and to direct-drilled winter barley seedbeds before sowing on a sandy clay loam.
