Correlation and path coefficient analysis for specific leaf weight and leaf area index at different stages of growth with grain yield of wheat

Two experiments were carried out in 1982/83 and 1983/1984 seasons on wheat plant [Triticum aestivum] to study the response of the grain yield to specific leaf weight mg/cm2 (SLW) and leaf area index (LAI) at 35, 50, 65 and 80 days after sowing through correlation and path coefficient analysis. Correlation coefficient determinations were higher for LAI at 80 days in both seasons; whereas for SLW it was higher at 50 and 80 days for the former seasons, respectively. Path coefficient analysis indicated that SLW showed the highest values of direct and total effect of variation of yield at 65 and 80 days after sowing, respectively, as compared with the other periods of growth in both seasons.
