Reactions of 45 test plant species and cultivars enabled a scheme for differentiation of 10 CMV isolates to be developed. The str. groups N and U were distinguished by the symptoms they produced on tobacco Samsun and Nicotiana glutinosa, and CMV-U strs were further classified into subgroup CMV U/L (causing systemic infection of Phaseolus vulgaris and cowpea) and subgroup CMV-U/nL (unable to cause systemic infection of these hosts).
