Digestibility and rumen fermentation in sheep fed diets based on increased levels of sugar cane (Saccharum officinarum L.)

Digestibility and rumen fermentation in sheep fed diets based on increased levels of sugar cane (Saccharum officinarum L.)

Revista da Faculdade de Medicina Veterinaria e Zootecnia da Universidade de Sao Paulo 23(1): 91

Eight sheep were given maize silage or with sugarcane replacing 0, 33, 66 or 100% of silage. Feed intake and DM digestibility did not vary among the groups. Rumen fluid in the last group had the lowest molar and absolute amount of acetic acid; these respective values decreased and increased after feeding. Propionic and butyric acid values increased until 2 h after feeding and the molar percentage of isobutyric acid decreased.
