Economic policy requirements of Austrian tourism

Economic policy requirements of Austrian tourism

Wirtschaftspolitische Blatter 32(5): 472-482

Beginning with a discussion of the national and international meaning of tourism for Austria, as illustrated by comparative statistics of overnight stays by foreign guests both in Austria and other western European countries, the article proceeds to examine the functions of tourism in terms of its contribution to the balance of payments, employment and regional income distribution; its role in and importance to the Austrian economy and to economic policy; its economic characteristics, for example, the sector's high capital and labour intensity; its implications for international taxation; and its economic policy requirements. After World War 2, the industry was given preference in terms of economic policy objective and it was only once tourism's economic significance and profitability had been recognized that policy became directed towards it. Since the mid-1970s, however, below average support and encouragement for tourism has once again been shown.
