96 Large White sows were studied during their first 2 pregnancies. Controls were fed a diet containing 86% barley and 10% soyabean meal. Other groups received diets containing 96% barley, wheat or maize, without supplementary protein. For control, barley, wheat and maize groups, weight gain during pregnancy averaged 58.3, 48.0, 47.3 and 39.4 kg resp., net gain (total gain minus litter weight) 41.4, 32.5, 31.7 and 25.1 kg, and weight loss during lactation 13.9, 6.0, 4.0 and 7.1 kg.
