Effect of iodine, copper and zinc supplements to diets with a high proportion of rapeseed meal on growth and function of the thyroid gland in fattening pigs. 3. Effect on thyroid mass and histomorphometric findings and on triiodothyronine and thyroxine in serum

Effect of iodine, copper and zinc supplements to diets with a high proportion of rapeseed meal on growth and function of the thyroid gland in fattening pigs. 3. Effect on thyroid mass and histomorphometric findings and on triiodothyronine and thyroxine in serum

Archives of Animal Nutrition 36(4/5): 371-380

Trials on a total of 272 fattening pigs are reported. With soya (control) and rapeseed oilmeal diets, a deficiency of iodine increased thyroid mass and epithelial cell height and reduced serum triiodothyronine and, especially, thyroxine, always significantly. With rapeseed supplementary I clearly reduced, but did not cancel, the goitrogenic effect. Differing response of serum hormones to goitre stage and reduced feed intake is examined.
