Since 1963, 2 Hereford and 2 Aberdeen-Angus (AA) lines have been selected for 168-day postweaning weight gain on a high-energy or medium-energy diet fed ad lib. In 1984-87, calves from each line were randomly assigned to high- and medium-energy diets. Postweaning gain was 38% higher for AA and Hereford calves fed the high-energy diet than for those fed the medium-energy diet (P<0.01).
