Medicago sativa sown in summer 1978 and 1980 after harvesting oats for green fodder and with tillage treatments of rotavation or ploughing showed poorer emergence (188 plants/msuperscript 2) than that sown in spring; better summer emergence was obtained in 1979 when precipitation was higher and the soil was tilled with power harrows. Yields of 0.39-1.21 t DM were obtained in 1979 and 1981 but no yields in 1979 and 1980.
