In controlled environment studies, M. sativa seedlings were grown in soil with mean daily temp. of 26.5 degrees C at 6 cm depth (range 17.4-13.1 degrees ) and given N-free nutrient solution or nutrients plus the equivalent of 33.6 kg N/ha during the first 7 weeks growth. N application increased root, shoot and total seedling lengths, seedling vol. and wt and nodule number per plant. Differences were greater as the plants matured.
