Effect of nitrogen rates and time of application on some morphological characters and yield of grain sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench)

In field trials in 1980-81 at Sohag, Egypt, N was applied as urea (46% N) at 100, 115, 130, 145 or 160 kg/ha in equal split applications at 21 days and 35, 45 or 55 days after sowing. Grain yield increased with increasing N rate up to 145 kg/ha in 1980 and up to 160 kg/ha in 1981. N rate had no effect on time to 50% flowering or plant height. Applying half the N at 21 days and half at 45 days after sowing increased both the time taken to reach 50% flowering and grain yield.
