Effect of preceding crop, sowing rate and nitrogen rate and time of application on the yield and quality of spring barley in the beet-growing region

In field trials in 1981-83, spring barley Mas, Kredit, Bonus and KM 123 were sown after sugarbeet or winter wheat at rates of 3.5 or 5 million germinable seeds/ha and given 0-120 kg N/ha. Winter wheat was a less favourable preceding crop than organically-manured sugarbeet. Malting quality was lower, grain CP higher and malt extraction lower for barley after winter wheat than after sugarbeet. Sowing rate did not affect yield.
