In field trials during 1979-82, winter rye Janos (prone to lodging) was sown at 250, 350 and 500 seeds/msuperscript 2 on 20-25 Sep. and 6-8 or 20-26 Oct. Delayed sowing was correlated with increasing stem stability, but reduced plant density, plant height and grain yield. The lower rates of sowing tended to result in slightly higher yields.
