Effect of three interrow cultivation methods on the yield and chemical composition of dryland lucerne on the eastern Transvaal highveld

3 methods of interrow cultivation, ripping (40-50 cm deep), shallow tine cultivation (5-10 cm) and control (no cultivation) were compared during the 1982/83 and 1983/84 growing seasons in an existing stand of Medicago sativa which was established in 0.9 m rows. Factors such as soil moisture and weed infestation determined the time of cultivation. Interrow cultivation increased DM yield appreciably, but no significant differences in yield were recorded between the 2 cultivation methods.
