Effect of uterine lavage on clinical and laboratory parameters in postpartum mares

Equine Practice 9(2): 20...26

Effect of uterine lavage on clinical and laboratory parameters in postpartum mares

76 mares, which foaled normally and expelled placentas within 4 hours, were assigned alternately to uterine lavage (3 x 4 litres 0.1% povidone iodine) within 24 hours of foaling or no treatment (controls). Uterine involution was assessed by rectal palpation before and on days 2, 5 and 9 after foaling. On day 9 each uterus was examined bacteriologically and by endometrial biopsy. Uterine lavage had no effect on the parameters investigated.
