Effect of vitamin A and beta -carotene on immunoreactivity and success in calving

Latvian Brown cows in late pregnancy were given daily, from 1 month to calving until the start of the grazing period, 200 mg beta -carotene from microbial biomass or 150 000 IU of Mikrovit A, or no additional vitamin. At the start of the feeding trial concentration of carotene in blood serum was 0.30 to 0.50 mg/litre, and that of vitamin A was 250 to 400 mu g/litre. Microvit A reduced the incidence of afterbirth retention from 21%, in the control group, to 7%.
