Effect of vitamin D on lead transport in the small intestine of chickens and the role of calcium-binding protein in that process
The effect of vitamin D on the development of lead toxicity was studied in chickens. The extent of toxicity was indicated by the concentration of D-amino laevulinic acid in erythrocytes, which varied from 5.6 micro g/ml in racnitic chickens to 10.8 in chickens given 500 U of cholecalciferol. The increase in toxicity was directly accompanied by increased concentration of vitamin D-dependent calcium-binding (Ca-BP) protein in the duodenal mucous membrane.
