Effect of water stress on soybean metabolism

Soyabeans were grown in freely-draining pots in soil containing 15N-nitrate for 4 weeks. The soil was then washed with a 14N solution water-stressed for 9 days. Insoluble sugar content decreased to 35% and leaf water potential declined to -2.5 MPa; sucrose content increased by 5 times with this treatment. Water stress suppressed plant growth and emergence of new leaves. Total free amino acid content increased from 39.8 to 135.0 micro mol/g DW after 8 days water stress.
