Effects of changes of testa penetrability on germination and storability of seeds of Astragalus sinicus

A comparative study in 1981 revealed that the impenetrability of seed coats of Astragalus sinicus was responsible for the dormancy of seeds for about 90 days after maturity, which could not be broken by exposing to sunlight, freezing, seed treatments and high temp. of 25-28.2 degrees C, irrespective of and locations. When seeds were stored for 90-365 days, some irregular rifts formed on the testa, through which water penetrated allowing the seeds to germinate.
