Effects of chitosan on biosynthesis of Nicotiana tabacum cell cultures

Chitosan can mimic effects of plant pathogens by eliciting phytoalexin accumulation and increasing synthesis of phenols, terpenoids and alkaloids. In tobacco cell suspension cultures chitosan induced phenol synthesis, cell wall lignification, increased plasmalemma permeability and callose synthesis, and decreased nicotine synthesis.
