Application of superphosphate produced with waste sulphuric acid containing chloral or trichloroacetic acid has caused toxicosis in groundnuts and maize in some areas of Shandong since 1980. Groundnut plants on moderately loamy brown earth treated with 0-25 p.p.m. chloral produced visual toxicity symptoms of stunting, hypertrophic branches on stem bases, leaf rolling and sterile flowers; maize showed symptoms of curly and stunted seedlings, curly leaves and deformed ears.
