Effects of chloroacetamide herbicides and sorghum seed safeners on mid-function oxidases

In an assay using 3-day old sorghum coleoptiles, the epoxidation of aldrin to dieldrin by the coleoptiles was used to indicate sorghum mid-function oxidase (MFO) activity. Results indicate that safeners increased the amount of aldrin converted to dieldrin and that the MFOs were receiving the maximum amount of aldrin they could epoxidise under the assay conditions. In experiments on alachlor metabolism, 77% of alachlor disappeared from sorghum coleoptiles in 8 h.
