In field trials in Minas Gerais in 1983-84, maize BR 300 was grown in the presence or absence of weeds for the entire growth period or for 2-10 weeks after emergence. Hoeing for 2 and 4 weeks after emergence gave grain yields of 21.0 and 13.3%, resp., lower than when weed removal occurred throughout growth.
