Effects of container design on growth of Quercus laurifolia Michx

Effects of container design on growth of Quercus laurifolia Michx

Research Report, Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station 12(7): 3

A plastic container for nursery trees, designed to air-prune roots and prevent girdling, is described. It has stair-stepped ridges moulded into the sides, trapping the growing roots and stimulating fibrous branching. Seedlings of the shade tree species Q. laurifolia were raised in 1-gal standard circular plastic containers, 0.5-gal wax cartons open at the base and placed on a 6-mm wire mesh, or 1-gal stair-stepped containers. Plant growth was assessed 210 days later and data are tabulated.
