White, clumped somatic embryoids, able to withstand freezing in liquid nitrogen, were produced at low frequencies when leaf callus was cultured on a standard medium. The frequency of such embryoids increased markedly when sucrose concentration of the medium was increased from 0.1 to 0.3 M.
