Effects of cutting frequency and the last cutting date on regrowth and production in timothy-dominated sward

In field experiments during 1980-83, swards dominated by Phleum pratense were cut 2, 3 or 4 times/year; each treatment had a last cutting date on 30 Sep., 10 Oct. or 20 Oct. Mean total DM yield ranged from 8.08 t/ha with 4 cuts/year with the last cut on 30 Sep. to 9.84 t with 2 cuts/year and a last cut on 30 Sep. Spring growth started earlier in plots which were cut 3 or 4 times/year with last cuts on 30 Sep. or 10 Oct.
