Effects of dietary propionate on serum lipids and lipoproteins in the pig

Effects of dietary propionate on serum lipids and lipoproteins in the pig

Swine in biomedical research Volume 2: 745-754

Effects of dietary propionic acid (PA) or calcium propionate (CP) on lipid metabolism were determined in 144 crossbred pigs. In experiment 1, isonitrogenous and isoenergetic diets, based on barley-soyabean meal or barley-canola meal containing 0, 3, 6 or 9% PA were given. Inclusion of PA reduced the total serum cholesterol, which was associated with a reduction in the high-density lipoprotein (HDL) fraction. Dietary PA caused a slight increase in the lipid content of heart and liver.
