Effects of dietary-sodium depletion on potassium transport in rat distal colon in vitro: kinetics of K absorption and the regulatory role of K secretory channels

The distal colon of normal and sodium-depleted rats was used to study the characteristics of the potassium secretory process by using the K channel blockers tetraethylammonium (TEA) and caesium, and the kinetics of K absorption in Na-free (choline substitution) Ringer. Colonic segments removed from male Sprague-Dawley rats (250 to 300 g) were mounted in Ussing-type chambers and bathed by bicarbonate Ringer at 37 degrees C and gassed with 95% O2/5% CO2.
