Effects of different levels of carrageenan on colonic mucin degradation and serum cholesterol level in rats

Effects of different levels of carrageenan on colonic mucin degradation and serum cholesterol level in rats

Progress in diet and nutrition: 158-164

Groups of 5 male Sprague-Dawley rats 28 days old were given a basal diet with 1% cholesterol alone or with 5% cellulose or 5, 10 or 15% carrageenan (CG). With 5% CG serum cholesterol values fell and colonic mucinase activity was similar to that in rats given cellulose or no fibre.
