Effects of different management practices on soil structure and surface crusting

Topsoil samples of zero tillage and conventionally cultivated plots was studied. Total porosity and pore distribution in three shape groups were measured for thin sections of undisturbed samples with a Quantimet 720. Total porosity was significantly higher in conventionally cultivated soils, but the proportion of pores measuring from 30 to 500 mu m, considered as the most important in soil-plant-water relations, was higher in the zero tilled soils.
