Effects of different polyethylene films and methods of mulching on the repellency of alate aphids and yield of tobacco

Polyethylene films were tested as repellents of aphids in tobacco fields in Taiwan in 1984 and 1985. Silver polyethylene films were most effective, percentage reduction in catches of aphids in yellow water traps being 66, 67 and 48 with pale silver, deep silver and transparent films, respectively. In 1985 the numbers of alate aphids trapped in early October-early November were reduced by 35 and 39% in whole ridge mulches and soil mulches between rows, respectively.
