Effects of dimethyl sulphoxide on the gametophytic and sporophytic phases of Pteridium aquilinum (L.) Kuhn

DMSO at up to 10 ml/litre of growth medium had no significant influence on P. aquilinum gametophyte growth or morphology. However, significant effects on embryo development and sporophyte morphology were shown. The most striking of these was that more than one embryo developed from each fertilized gametophyte grown on DMSO medium. 2-5 embryos regularly developed on each gametophyte cultured on media containing this solvent; control gametophytes bore single sporophytes.
