Effects of drought on the initiation, yield, and size distribution of tubers of Solanum tuberosum L. cv. Bintje

Effects of drought on the initiation, yield, and size distribution of tubers of Solanum tuberosum L. cv. Bintje

Potato Research 29(4): 487-500

In pot experiments potato plants were grown with roots in nutrient solution and stolons and tubers in a separate chamber and were exposed to dry or wet conditions in the stolon chamber and normal or low osmotic potential of the nutrient solution during tuberization. Drought in the stolon chamber enhanced the initiation of stolons and tubers. Although this caused a minor reduction in yield, more large tubers were produced because there were more large tubers on the early-initiated stolons.
