Effects of early weaning on growth rate of spring-born calves and an economic comparison with those weaned at normal ages

The 220-day body weight and weight gain from 100 to 220 days of age were significantly higher for 20 Aberdeen-Angus calves weaned at 100 days of age (514+or-17 and 268+or-16 lb resp.) than for 20 calves weaned normally at 220 days (434+or-12 and 194+or-10 lb). Body weight of dams of early-weaned and normally weaned calves averaged 1010+or-22 and 1093+or-22 lb resp. 100 days after parturition, and 1101+or-18 and 1009+or-19 lb at 220 days; differences between weaning groups were significant.
