Effects of energy and protein levels on milk yield and milk composition of lactating dairy cows

For 80 days 27 Holstein-Friesian cows in 9 groups were given maize silage, hay and concentrates to supply combinations of 80, 100 or 120% of NRC (1978) standards for TDN and for crude protein (CP). Milk yield tended to increase as both TDN and CP increased, but the differences (14.4-17.5 kg) were not significant; milk SNF and protein contents increased as TDN increased (P<0.05).
