Effects of engineering controls on methane fermentation toxicity response

Effects of engineering controls on methane fermentation toxicity response

Journal Water Pollution Control Federation 57(12): 662A, 1134-1141

The response of methane fermentation to toxicity was studied with special attention to toxicity concentration, solids retention time, biomass concentration, toxicant exposure time, cell age, toxicant administration pattern, and temperature. Cyanide was used as model toxicant. Unacclimated methanogens were inhibited at cyanide concentrations as low as 0.5 mg/L, but 30 mg/L could be tolerated with acclimation; even exposures to 500 mg/L for one hour were not lethal. Inhibition was a function of cell age. The pattern of toxicant administration affected the response. Reduced temperature delayed the recovery of gas production from slug doses of cyanide. Cyanide was bacteriostatic and not bacteriocidal, even at very high concentrations for short periods.
